STUDENT EXPERIENCE

A place to belong

Transitioning into a high school of 1,700 students can be difficult, especially for students who have been previously disengaged or disconnected from school. The Empower Academy strives to create a place where students feel they belong. Our close-knit learning community focuses on collaboration and providing opportunities for students to connect. Our community is strengthened by circle discussions, field trips, and celebrations. We also work to create a culture where students feel free to take risks and make mistakes without fear of ridicule. Our students have said that Empower is like a "second family."

Student empowerment

Empower Academy students are truly empowered in a variety of ways. The program's many PBL experiences allow opportunities for student voice and choice. Students make many decisions about each project, including how they work and what they create. Students also have the opportunity to be part of the Empower Advisory Team (EAT). This group collaborates with the Empower teachers to help plan the direction of the program and give input on proposed assignments, units, and projects. EAT members also plan events that build our learning community, such as holiday parties and field trips.
