PROJECT BASED LEARNING
A dynamic classroom approach in which students actively explore real challenges and acquire a deeper knowledge.

Though instruction in the Empower Academy takes many different forms, a key component of the program is interdisciplinary Project Based Learning (PBL). PBL is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging challenge. Projects are focused on student learning goals and include the following elements:

Challenging Problem or Question
The project is framed by a meaningful problem to solve or a question to answer, at the appropriate level of challenge.

Critique and Revision
Students give, receive, and use feedback to improve their process and products.

Public Product
Students make their project work public by explaining, displaying and/or presenting it to people beyond the classroom

Benefits of PBL
With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying. Students are more likely to retain the knowledge gained through this approach far more readily than through traditional textbook-centered learning. In addition, students develop confidence and self-direction as they move through both team-based and independent work. In the process of completing their projects, students also hone their organizational and research skills, and develop better communication with their peers and adults.
Many studies have proven that PBL has positive effects on student academic achievement, mastery of 21st century competences such as problem-solving and critical thinking, addressing the needs of diverse learners and closing achievement gaps, and increasing students' motivation to learn.
